  • Take steps to avoid personal triggers as much as possible. Spending time with substance abusing friends and going places associated with drug or alcohol use is never wise. It is also important to learn to address emotional triggers in a healthy way. This may involve counseling.
  • Develop a strong support system. Twelve-step or other addiction recovery groups are a natural way to begin building a network of friends who understand both the struggles and the goal. It can also be helpful to join organizations that emphasize substance-free activities.
  • Take care of your body. This involves getting adequate sleep, eating well, exercising, and avoiding environmental toxins. If your body is given the resources it needs, the brain can heal and drug cravings will reduce in intensity and frequency.
  • Practice relapse prevention skills. These skills are generally taught in rehab. Patients are taught techniques such as distraction, urge surfing and seeking support.
