Drug Treatment

Although almost 850,000 people in the state of California needed drug treatment in 2005, only 193,000 actually entered a drug addiction treatment program. In San Diego, only 5,500 people were admitted within a six-month time span. Often, people don’t recognize the benefits that drug treatment offers or even that they have a problem with drugs.

Do You Need Drug Treatment?

Drug TreatmentOne thing that is certain is that all addicts can benefit from addiction treatment. Regardless of the length of time you’ve been addicted or the substance you’re addicted to, drug rehab centers are here to help you. Often, however, you may ask yourself if your addiction is severe enough to need treatment. Any addiction is serious and you should seek treatment to ensure you get your life back on the right track.

To be more precise, however, if you find yourself taking more of a drug in order to get the same effects as before, your body has started to develop a tolerance to it. When this happens, your body is unable to process the drug except in large amounts, which puts you at risk of an overdose. Overdose can shut down your system and even be fatal.

You also risk overdose if you attempt to detox on your own. Fewer than 10 percent of all self-detox attempts are successful. In fact, these attempts may even result in stronger addictions and consuming higher dosages as a way of combating painful withdrawal. These higher dosages can, of course, contribute to overdose.

Proper treatment is the key to avoid suffering the effects of drug overdose.

How Drug Treatment Works

Drug treatment can be as effective as you want it to be. Often it is an all-encompassing program that not only helps you combat the effects of withdrawal, but also gives you the chance to therapeutically explore why and how your addiction developed. Other treatment programs give you the freedom to come face to face with the reasons you are addicted, and offer you counseling to deal with these pressures.

There are also luxury drug rehab programs, as well as holistic-based, or even gender- or age-specific.

Essentially drug treatment is a multi-step process. It requires cooperation and trust, and operates on the assumption that you have the desire to recover. Treatment can take months, sometimes even years, and it’s up to you to always be vigilant about your recovery. Programs like Narcotics or Alcoholics Anonymous exist to help you through the years after your release from treatment.
